Welcome to another Learn27Edu guide! If you are preparing for the IELTS exam, Writing Task 1 can seem a bit intimidating at first. You are handed a graph, chart, or map and told to write at least 150 words about it in 20 minutes. But don't worry! With the right template, this task becomes much easier.
As the famous writer William Zinsser once said, "Clear thinking becomes clear writing; one can't exist without the other." Let's clear up your thinking with a simple, high-scoring template.
The 4-Paragraph Template
To get a good score, you don't need to be a creative genius. You just need to follow a clear, logical structure. Here is the best 4-paragraph template to use:
1. The Introduction (1 sentence) Rewrite the question in your own words. Do not copy the original prompt!
- Useful phrase: "The provided chart illustrates..." or "The graph compares..."
2. The Overview (2 sentences) This is the most important part of your essay! Summarize the main trends or the biggest differences. Do not include any specific numbers here.
- Useful phrase: "Overall, it is clear that..."
3. Body Paragraph 1 (3-4 sentences) Look at the data and group the first set of details together. This could be the items that increased the most, or the highest numbers in the chart. Include specific dates and percentages.
- Useful phrase: "Looking at the details, in the year..."
4. Body Paragraph 2 (3-4 sentences) Group the remaining details together. Contrast them with the first paragraph if possible.
- Useful phrase: "In contrast, when looking at..."
A Real-Life Example
Let's say you get a bar chart showing the sales of coffee and tea in a cafe over three months (January, February, March).
- Introduction: The bar chart illustrates the monthly sales figures for coffee and tea at a local cafe during the first quarter of the year.
- Overview: Overall, it is clear that coffee sales increased steadily over the period, while tea sales fluctuated and remained significantly lower.
- Body 1: Looking at the details, coffee started at 200 cups in January. This figure rose dramatically by February to 350 cups, finally peaking at 400 cups in March.
- Body 2: In contrast, tea sales began the year at 150 cups. Although there was a slight dip to 100 cups in February, sales recovered to finish the quarter at 175 cups.
How is it Scored?
Your Writing Task 1 is graded on four things, each worth 25% of your score:
- Task Achievement: Did you answer the prompt and include a clear overview?
- Coherence and Cohesion: Is your writing organized in paragraphs? Do you use linking words like however and therefore?
- Lexical Resource: Did you use a good variety of vocabulary without repeating the same words over and over?
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Did you use a mix of simple and complex sentences correctly?
The Score Breakdown:
- Band 5.0: You tried to answer the prompt, but your overview might be missing, or you just listed numbers like a robot. There are noticeable grammar mistakes.
- Band 6.0: You have an overview and grouped your information okay, but your vocabulary is a bit basic.
- Band 7.0+: As former IELTS examiners advise, "A band 7 requires a clear, accurate overview and a wide range of vocabulary used naturally." Your paragraphs flow perfectly, you grouped the data logically, and you made very few grammatical errors.
Practice this template a few times, and you will see your confidence—and your score—start to rise. Keep practicing, and stay tuned to Learn27Edu for more tips!
